The police statement was made very quickly. The officers even said they would help Kendall apply for a ‘Bravery and Righteousness’ award.
As she was getting ready to leave, she heard a police officer on the phone with Robin’s wife.
After hearing that her husband had stabbed a police officer on the street, Robin’s wife said spitefully, “I’ve already filed for divorce. He has nothing to do with me! He’s been domestically abusing me for over twenty years. As soon as he saw me talking to a man, he’d accuse me of cheating, drag me home, and beat me! He even threatened to kill me! You should execute this kind of scum directly!”
———
Kendall walked out of the police station, and the phone that had been quiet in her pocket suddenly vibrated.
She pulled it out and saw ‘Jasper Reed’ on the screen.
Kendall’s expression immediately turned cold. Jasper, the culprit who had made her lie in the hospital for a month!
As for his other identity, Kendall felt sick just thinking about it.
Years ago, the Hansen and Reed families had arranged a marriage between their children while their respective wives were pregnant at the same time.
After Mia’s identity as a fake daughter was exposed, Jasper scoffed at Kendall, the real daughter who had just returned to the Hansen family. He kept saying that he and Mia were truly in love and told Kendall to get lost and stay away from them.
In truth, Kendall looked down on a leech like him, who was useless and had grown up entirely dependent on his family.
But for some reason, he was so full of himself that he believed Kendall was a desperate woman pining after him. He would occasionally show up in front of her and act like a clown to get her attention.
She slid her slender, fair finger across the screen to answer the call.
Before Kendall could speak, Jasper’s furious voice boomed from the phone. “Kendall! Are you insane? I heard you beat up Mia in the villa and pushed her into the pool! How can you be so vicious? Mia can’t swim, pushing her into the water was attempted murder!”
Kendall: “…”
Jasper continued to roar like an angry dinosaur. “I’m telling you, even if you kill Mia, I won’t give you a second look!”
Kendall held the phone away from her ear and asked seriously, “Are you sick? If you are, you should go see a doctor, okay? Did Mia not tell you that I didn’t just kick her into the water, I kicked her dear parents and brother in there, too? I’ve never targeted her alone. I clearly targeted her entire family. And as for attempted murder… are you saying a four-foot-deep pool can instantly drown four adults?”
Jasper choked on his words. He was on a business trip, which was why he hadn’t attended the Hansen family gathering that day.
Mia had just called him, crying, and said that Kendall had suddenly appeared at the party, beat her up, and pushed her into the pool. If someone hadn’t pulled her out, she would have drowned. She even said that despite being treated like that, she didn’t hold any resentment toward Kendall. Instead, she felt guilty and wondered if she should leave the Hansen family so Kendall would calm down.
Jasper had been furious after hearing all this and immediately called Kendall to confront her. He didn’t expect Kendall to have kicked the rest of the Hansen family into the water as well! ‘Sure enough, she’s a rural country girl with no manners.’
Jasper spoke again. “It must have been Uncle and Aunt Hansen’s worst nightmare to have a daughter like you.”
Kendall’s eyes darkened, and she said in a cold voice, “Jasper, where are you right now?”
“I’m on a business trip in Queensland,” Jasper said angrily. “Otherwise, why do you think I wasn’t at the party today? If I were there, I wouldn’t have let you harm a single hair on Mia’s head!”
“Alright,” Kendall nodded. “I’ll remember what you said. Also, for the incident that put me in the hospital, you just wait. The next time I see you, I won’t be surnamed Lane if I don’t beat you into a fuzzy caterpillar.”
With that, without waiting for Jasper to react, Kendall hung up.
She tapped the screen and blocked him.
With the contact information for that leech gone from her phone, Kendall felt the air become much fresher.
She figured she might as well go all the way and block everyone in the Hansen family, too.
The Hansen family was large. When Mr. and Mrs. Hansen were young, they seemed to have focused only on one ‘sport’, as there were three sons before Kendall. After she was born, they had another set of twins four years later.
However, in Kendall’s eyes, none of these rotten bamboos produced good shoots.
The eldest brother, Leo Hansen, was a business elite, but as soon as he returned home, it was as if his brain had been left at the office. He completely ignored her, his biological sister, but was extremely attentive to Mia, the impostor. He only ever bought gifts for Mia when he went on business trips and often listened to her one-sided stories, giving Kendall a cold shoulder and warning her not to bully Mia.
The second brother, Liam Hansen, whom she kicked into the water that afternoon, was also a Mia’s advocate.
As for the third brother, Levi Hansen, his personality was relatively milder, and he wasn’t as repulsed by Kendall as the others. But if he had to choose between Kendall and Mia, he would definitely pick Mia.
And there was no need to even mention the fourth and fifth twin brothers, Luca Hansen and Luke Hansen. Those two undergrads had been completely manipulated by Mia. They had no respect for Kendall, their biological sister, and would constantly tell her to get out of the Hansen family.
Before, she had been mindful of their blood ties, so no matter how much she was wronged, she would swallow it. But now, if any of them dared to ridicule her again, she would beat them, one by one, or a pair at a time!
Kendall’s new skill she learned after being discharged from the hospital is beating up scumbags!
However, Kendall hadn’t forgotten about her system.
Looking at her three days of remaining life, she poked the system in her mind. “After I completed the mission just now, besides the life value, there was a karma score. What is that?”
> [I’m here, Host!]
> [My full name is the ‘Doing Good System’. As the name implies, I am here to promote positive energy and build a harmonious society.]
> [If the Host had not shown up today, in the original timeline, Robin would have stood in a standoff with the police for three to four hours. When he grew too tired and realized he couldn’t escape, he would have mercilessly stabbed the hostage in the neck and then been killed on the spot by the police. The hostage, due to severe blood loss, would have died in the ambulance.]
> [The Host’s appearance changed the outcome of this event, saving two lives and altering the fate of the hostage’s family members. Therefore, the karma score is +3.]
Kendall was more interested in something else. “What’s the use of the karma score?”
> [Karma can also be called ‘luck’. People with a lot of karma will have more blessings and a smooth life. The Host currently has a terminal illness, and karma can be used to heal and treat the body.]
> [Once the Host’s level increases, you can also use karma to purchase items in the system store.]
As the system finished speaking, a screen with Kendall’s personal information appeared before her.
Host: Kendall Lane
Good deeds level: 0 [1/10]
Having played video games, Kendall understood. “I completed one mission. I need to catch ten criminals and complete ten missions to level up, right?”
> [Yes.]
Kendall sharpened her imaginary blade. “Are there any more missions I can do now?”
> [Yes.]
Seeing her host so eager, the system immediately brought up the mission page for Kendall to see.
> [As of now, there are over 3 million fugitives in Astoria. The missions I’m showing you are all nearby, in the same city.]
> [If a criminal suddenly commits a crime like this afternoon’s incident or if a criminal is near you, I will immediately issue a new, relevant mission.]
Where the light is not shining, there will be shadows, and the malice that grows under the shadows is unscrupulous.
Even in a country with a perfect legal system and good public security like Astoria, there will still be people who take risks for their own selfishness and endanger society.
